Taxi Strike!

Last night the taxi strike took over all of Tegucigalpa. Our students were still trying to get home in the buses at 7:00 at night!! Imagine being on a bus for longer than 4 hours - they had no food, no way to go to the washroom...parents were upset - understandably!

The blockades that the taxi drivers set up shut down all the major roads, making it impossible to maneuver through the city. Some American School students had to stay at their school all night because they had track practice and couldn't leave afterwards. One of our own teachers, Robyn, was stuck downtown and we weren't sure if she was alright until today. She did end up getting to the Jones' place, after being stranded at a Texaco station. Those on strike were throwing rocks at other taxi drivers who weren't joining them. A motorcycle broke through one blockade and was chased by 20 angry men! Kristy and Krystal (two Pinares teachers who live downtown) had to walk by this mob to get to their home, they were afraid that the strikers would be mad at them for being American (who they're blaming for the high gas prices), but they walked through without any problems.

Now the city has shut down. We don't have school for the next two days since it takes forever to get through the city. And because of the situation downtown it is highly recommended that we stay in El Hatillo. We were pretty happy to hear that we had today off, but...its not a nice situation, so we're hoping it gets better soon. To celebrate we had a brunch potluck at our apartment. Last year any time we had a potluck at our apartment we would get the day off (not because we planned it, it just happened that way)...it seems to be holding true this year since we heard while we were at the potluck that we would have Thursday off school as well. And so the trend continues.

We're making the best of our situation, this afternoon we're going to play ultimate frisbee, tonight we'll go to Bible Study as usual and tomorrow I'm sure we'll just relax the day away...and not think about the fact that we need a few grocery items! :)
